School of Architecture and Planning, B.Arch, Semester 6 studio project - Apartments for the elderly

Visiting the construction site almost every day was part of the job and that’s where the know-how of materials stemmed from. Communicating with the masons and carpenters was essential to learn the building techniques to better design for this style of architecture.

CVA researched ways to actively involve local art into the construction process. As part of my internship, I was sponsored to attend a certificate course on textile dying held by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and given the opportunity to incorporate this technique into the design language of the company.

The spatial planning is based on traditional centrally-located courtyard homes. The plan is symmetrical in order to be able to build a sloping tile roof above the wide-open area surrounding the courtyard. This project allowed me to have one-on-one client meetings and estimating the cost of the project. Working with local material suppliers known to the firm and the client, it was possible to reduce the cost / sq.ft for the project by almost 200 rupees.
